Pineview Valley Water Main BreakApril 11th, 2012No Comments

Kamloops, B.C. – Last night at approximately 10:00 pm, a 600 mm (24″) water main broke in the Pineview Valley area. This water main is the main feeder from the booster station located behind Costco and feeds a reservoir above the Pineview Valley area. Crews are currently on site and have been most of the night. A repair has been made, which allows Pineview residents water, but pressure may be lower than normal and there may be further disruptions in water service when the final repair is made.Water flow is expected to return to normal by approximately 4:00 pm today. Kamloops Fire Rescue will have a fire tender in the area in case of fire.

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 at Victoria Royals – 7-5 Win

It was a wild Game 3 in Victoria with the Blazers prevailing 7-5 over the Royals. The Blazers were hit with a big blow early in the game as Chase Schaber suffered a laceration to his leg and was lost to the hockey club. The Royals were the better team in the first period as Zane Jones and Jamie Crooks gave the Royals a 2-0 lead. The Blazers were had a strong second period scoring six times. Goals by Dylan Willick shorthanded and Tim Bozon at 2:55 of the period tied the game up. Landon Cross gave the Blazers a lead with a power play marker at 4:36 of the second period. The Royals battled back as Jamie Crooks scored twice to complete his hat-trick for a 4-3 Royals lead. The Blazers continued to score with three more goals as Jordan DePape, Matt Needham and JC Lipon each tallied in the last five minutes of the period to give the Blazers a 6-4 lead. The Royals scored an early goal in the third period, but Colin Smith restored a two goal lead with his first goal of the playoffs. The Blazers held on for a 7-5 win. Cole Cheveldave made 18 saves for the win. The Blazers were 3-for-6 on the power play and also scored two shorthanded goals. Full Recap and Highlights.

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012 at Victoria Royals – 4-1 Win

Without team captain Chase Schaber, the Blazers played well in closing out the series with a 4-1 win. The Royals opened the scoring again with Ben Walker burying a rebound to make it 1-0. The Blazers tied it up as Matt Needham blasted a shot past goaltender Keith Hamilton. The game was tied 1-1 through the first period. The Blazers won every game in the series with a strong second period, and nothing changed in Game 4. Brendan Ranford scored his first goal of the series on a breakaway and Dylan Willick added to the lead with a great shot to make it 3-1 Blazers through two periods. The hockey club had a strong third period and Willick added an empty net goal to give the Blazers a 4-1 victory. Brandon Herrod had three assists for the Blazers. The win gave the Blazers a 4-0 best-of-seven series sweep over the Victoria Royals. Cole Cheveldave stopped 30 shots for the win. Full Recap and Highlights.

Blazers to face Winterhawks in the Second Round

The Kamloops Blazers and Portland Winterhawks will play in the second round of the WHL playoffs starting this Friday in Portland. The Blazers and ‘Hawks have not met in the playoffs since the 1994-95 season when the Blazers downed the ‘Hawks 4 games to 1 in a best-of-seven Conference semi-final.

Between 1981 and 1995, the Blazers and ‘Hawks met nine different times in the playoffs during the 14-year span. The Blazers are 5-4 in those nine playoff series.

In the four-game season series, each team won a game at home and on the road. The Blazers were 5-4 winners in Portland on October 14th and 5-1 winners at home on March 7th. The Winterhawks won 4-2 in Kamloops on November 2nd and were 5-2 winners in Portland on February 28th.

Thomson and Gelsinger Join Blazers

The Blazers have called up 15-year-old defenseman Jordan Thomson and 17-year-old forward Brayden Gelsinger for the remainder of the WHL playoffs. Thomson was the Blazers 1st pick, 4th overall in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, while Gelsinger was listed by the Blazers this past September. For more details, follow this link.

Schaber Out for WHL Playoffs

The Kamloops Blazers suffered a blow when team captain Chase Schaber went down with a season ending injury. The 20-year-old will not be able to suit up for the rest of the season, but his presence and leadership will continue off the ice. For full details, follow this link.

OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – March 22, 2012) – Health Canada is reminding Canadians of the importance of food safety for people with weakened immune systems.When you are ill, your immune system can be weakened which makes it harder for your body to fight off infections. Examples of people who may have weakened immune systems include transplant patients and those with diabetes, HIV, as well as some cancer patients. It is extremely important for people with weakened immune systems, and their caregivers, to follow food safety steps and avoid eating certain foods to help lower their risk of foodborne illness.It is estimated that there are approximately 11 million cases of foodborne illnesses in Canada every year. Many of these cases could be prevented by following proper food handling and preparation techniques.To minimize the risks of foodborne illness, follow these steps when handling and preparing food:Separate– At the grocery store, separate raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood from other grocery items. Place these raw foods in separate plastic bags that you can get in the produce or meat sections. — In your home refrigerator, store raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood on the bottom shelf to prevent any juices from dripping down onto other foods.Clean– Wash all plates, utensils, and cutting boards that touch or hold raw meat, poultry or seafood with warm soapy water, or in the dishwasher, before using them again for foods that are not cooked before eating, like fresh fruit and raw vegetables or ready-to-eat foods. You may also use the following solution to help you sanitize your surfaces and utensils: — Combine 5 mL (1 tsp) of bleach with 750 mL (3 cups) of water in a labelled spray bottle. — Spray the bleach solution on the surface/utensil and let stand briefly. — Rinse with lots of clean water and air dry (or use clean towels). — Wash your hands with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling raw meats, poultry, fish or seafood and after using the bathroom, touching pets or changing diapers. — Always wash raw fruits and vegetables gently in cool, running water. You can also use a vegetable brush to scrub hard skin produce such as carrots, potatoes, melons and squash. Remember, you can’t always tell whether foods carry surface bacteria by the way they look, smell or taste. — After using reusable bags for grocery shopping, make sure you wash them, especially if they contained raw meat, poultry, fish or seafood. It is a good practice to have grocery bags specifically for raw meats, poultry, fish and seafood; make sure they are clearly labelled as such. Chill– Make sure you store your raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood in the refrigerator at 4 degrees C (40 degrees F) or below. — After grocery shopping, make sure your raw meat, poultry and seafood are refrigerated as soon as possible; this is especially important on hot days. — Put leftovers back in the refrigerator as soon as you are finished eating. Never leave food out on the counter for more than two hours. — The simple rule is: when in doubt, throw it out. Cook– Make sure that your food is thoroughly cooked before eating it. You can reduce your risk of foodborne illness by avoiding high-risk foods. — Remember, visual cues like colour are not a guarantee that food is safe. Don’t guess! Use a digital instant-read food thermometer to check when meat and poultry are safe to eat. Cooked foods are safe to eat when internal temperatures are: — 71E C (160E F) for ground meat — 74E C (165E F) for leftover food and poultry parts — 85E C (185E F) for whole poultryCaution– Close attention should also be paid to the foods themselves. OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – March 21, 2012) – Effective today, tobacco manufacturers and importers will now be restricted to distributing and selling cigarette and little cigar packages with the new health warning messages and other labelling changes.”This milestone date represents an important step towards the full implementation of the new health-related labels for cigarettes and little cigars,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “We are now closer to putting important health and quitting information into the hands of millions of smokers.”Retailers now have until June 18, 2012 to sell their inventory displaying the old health warnings. As of June 19, 2012, only packages of cigarettes and little cigars that display the new health warnings can be legally sold at retail.”Recent research has reminded us that young people are still very vulnerable to the attractions of tobacco use”, said Heather Borquez, President and CEO of the Canadian Lung Association. “We welcome the new, stronger warning labels for tobacco products as a critical step to deter Canada’s youth from taking up smoking.”Changes under the Tobacco Products Labelling Regulations (Cigarettes and Little Cigars), introduced by the Government of Canada last September, include larger, more noticeable health warning messages, now covering 75% of the front and back of packages.Each warning includes a reference to a Canada-wide, toll-free quitline number and web address, which link smokers to provincial and territorial counselling and resources to help them quit smoking.Some warnings include messages from Canadians whose lives and health have been negatively affected by tobacco use. Among them is Barb Tarbox, an anti-smoking activist from Alberta who died in 2003 from lung cancer caused by smoking.Other labelling changes include new health information and information on how to quit smoking located on the inside of packs, enhanced with colour and graphics. The B.C. government’s ad campaign defending their position in the teachers’ dispute has cost more than $1.7 million, leaving the union to wonder why that money couldn’t have gone to the education system instead.
The province’s television ads have been running since Feb. 4, at a cost of $724,000. Radio commercials have cost nearly $600,000, and the government is also paying to advertise in print and online.
Gail Chaddock-Costello, president of the Langley Teachers’ Association, says that cost belies government claims that it has no more money to pump into the system.
"Teachers are appalled that taxpayer money is going to pay for anti-teacher ads," she told CTV News. Read the full story (with video) on the CTV site.

Week in Review: Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at Spokane Chiefs – 6-4 LossA late goal by the Chiefs did the Blazers in as they fell 6-4 in Spokane. The Chiefs opened the scoring with a power play marker, but Bronson Maschmeyer tied it up on a nice pass by Matt Needham to make it 1-1 through the first period. Goaltender Cole Cheveldave left the game due to an illness and Cam Lanigan started the second period. The Chiefs scored early as Brenden Kichton got his second goal of the game. The Blazers tied and then took the lead as a pair of goals from Tim Bozon and Chase Souto lifted the Blazers to a 3-2 lead. The Chiefs then scored twice to re-take the lead at 4-3. Tim Bozon tied it on a nice feed from Colin Smith to make it 4-4 through two periods. The Chiefs won the game scoring with only 47 seconds left and added an empty net goal for a 6-4 victory. The Cougars opened the scoring with an odd goal that deflected off two players and in. Jordan DePapetied the game up scoring on the power play for a 1-1 tie through the first period. The Cougars took the lead in the second period but Brendan Ranfordand Colin Smith gave the Blazers a 3-2 lead. Jesse Forsberg tied it up for the Cougars, but Jordan DePape scored his second of the game as the Blazers led 4-3 through two periods. The Blazers owned the third period with six goals. Smith, Brandon Herrod, Smith for the hat trick, Chase Souto, Cole Ully andRyan Hanes rounded out the scoring in the third period. The Cougars added a late power play goal for a 10-4 final. Cole Cheveldave had the win in goal with 23 saves. The Cougars scored the lone goal of the first period as Chase Witala put home his own rebound for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars made it 2-0 when Troy Bourke found Spencer Asuchak at the side of the goal. The Blazers cut into the lead finally getting a puck past goaltender Devon Fordyce. Tim Bozonwas set up by JC Lipon for his 36th goal of the season. The Blazers tied it midway through the third period as Chase Souto found Ryan Hanes in front of the net for his 8th goal of the year. The Blazers were again done in by a late goal as Reid Jackson’s point shot found its way past goaltender Cam Lanigan for a 3-2 Cougars lead. They added an empty net goal for the 4-2 win. The Kamloops Blazers had a terrific regular season finishing with a 47-20-2-3 record and 99 points, good for 4th overall in the WHL. The Blazers had their best record since the 1998-99 season and were crowned B.C. Division Champions for the first time since 2001-02.
The Blazers had the biggest turnaround in the WHL this season with 35 more points and 18 more wins than all of last season.
The Blazers finished the year 22-9-2-3 record on the road which was the best road record in the WHL with 49 points. The 22 road wins were also the most for the franchise since the 1995-96 season.
The Blazers scored 290 goals which was 3rd best in the WHL and the most goals since the 1998-99 season. The Blazers have allowed 211 goals this season which was 5th best in the WHL.
Rookie goaltender Cole Cheveldave recorded 34 wins which is the most by a Blazers rookie and goaltender since the 1998-99 season when Kenric Exner won 34 games.
Rookie forward Tim Bozon finished tops amongst rookies with 36 goals and was 2nd in the WHL with 71 points this season. Bozon recorded the most goals and points for a rookie since the 2000-01 season when Scottie Upshall had 42 goals and 87 points.
Fourth year forward Brendan Ranford led the Blazers in goals with 40, assists with 52 and points with 92. Ranford is the first player to score 40 goals and reach 90+ points since Erik Christensen had 54 goals and 108 points to lead the WHL in scoring during the 2002-03 season.
Eight players reached the 50+ point plateau this season. The last time a Blazers team had eight 50+ point players was during the 1994-95 season when they had eight players with at least 67 points.
Six players reached 20+ goals this season which was the first time since the 2000-01 season.

The Blazers moved up to 8th in the final rankings. The Blazers were as high as 2nd in early February and were ranked in the CHL Top 10 for 16 of the 25 weeks in the CHL season. OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – March 19, 2012) – To mark Poison Prevention Week (March 18-24), the Government of Canada is joining consumer product safety agencies in the United States and Mexico to call attention to the dangers of unintentional poisoning, one of the leading causes of injury among children.Unintentional poisoning is a preventable injury. Yet each year, thousands of children in Canada are taken to emergency rooms after consuming poisonous substances."The most effective way of reducing injuries due to poisoning is through prevention," said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health. "Parents and caregivers should learn basic poison prevention techniques as most of these injuries occur in and around the home."While child-resistant packaging, critical safety messaging and education efforts have contributed to a significant decline in injuries and deaths, Canada, the US and Mexico are aiming to further reduce the number of unintentional poisonings. The three countries’ consumer product safety agencies have committed to working together to raise awareness among consumers, who play a critical role of safely choosing, using, and disposing of products.Among the recommended safety tips:– Parents and caregivers are urged to keep chemicals, medications, cleaning supplies and art supplies not meant for children safely stored in a locked cabinet or box, out of the reach of children. — Parents and caregivers should keep household chemicals and medicines in their original containers and leave the original labels on the products.– Older children should be aware of the dangers associated with poisonings and help their parents keep younger siblings in sight. — If a poisoning is suspected, the local Poison Control Centre or 911 should be contacted immediately. In addition to a joint awareness campaign with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, and Mexico’s Consumer Protection Federal Agency (Profeco) and Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS), Health Canada is also working with Safe Kids Canada and the Canadian Association of Poison Control Centres to create and distribute resources for ongoing poison prevention education initiatives. This is a message from Dr. Terrence Sullivan the Superintendent of Schools for the Kamloops/Thompson School District. We were advised at 8:00 am today that teachers in British Columbia, including teachers in the Kamloops/Thompson School District will be withdrawing their services effective Monday, March 5th, 2012. Although schools and district facilities will remain open during this withdrawal of services, the absence of our teaching staff will mean that it will not be possible to provide instruction or adequate levels of supervision to ensure the safety of students. As well, buses will not be operating during this withdrawal of services. As a result, I am advising parents not to send students to school beginning on Monday. I will be communicating further with parents once teachers have returned to their duties and it is appropriate for students to return to school. Also, I have been advised that it is the intention of some students not to attend all their classes tomorrow, Friday, March 2nd, to show their support for their teachers. While I appreciate that some students may want to show their support for their teachers in this manner, I want to express to parents our concerns regarding this type of activity. Our concerns relate to the considerable disruption this could cause to the school system and it will make it impossible for us to properly supervise students and secure their safety if they are not in attendance. It also has the potential for younger students to copy the behaviour of older students. Therefore, I am requesting that parents urge students to attend all their scheduled classes tomorrow and I would also ask parents to counsel students on other means to show their support for their teachers. I would appreciate your assistance in helping us to maintain the stability of the system while minimizing the impact on students as the parties involved in this dispute work to bring it to resolution.
